MAIN FEATURES OF THE MULTIMEDIA METHOD:

> You'll learn the target language(s) using various forms of media, e.g. interactive CD-ROMs, audio and video clips, flash cards, etc., while being exposed to exciting aspects of the country’s culture (e.g. Music, Sports, Entertainment /Showbiz, Computer Games, Culture, Food/Cuisine, etc);

*All the video clips, audio clips, pdf files, images, dictionaries, games and other language materials used in the course will be shared to the students through USB transfer . Samples of authentic cuisine, i.e. food & beverage) eaten by native speakers will also be shared to students during some sessions.
> You'll learn to UNDERSTAND native speakers however fast they speak as well as learn to SPEAK like them. This means that informal language such as slang and other forms of colloquialisms, which are very commonly used in REAL LIFE, will all be covered as early as the BASIC, CONVERSATIONAL LEVEL. The main goal is to attain a native-like proficiency or be able to use the target language just like native speakers do which requires the use of these colloquialisms.

> You have the power to decide and choose what to learn, i.e. what you only need and/or want. You can also customize and personalize the language materials used and even make requests for
multimedia files that you want to use in learning such as those featuring your favorite shows or celebrities in the target language. Your instructor is also open to any feedback including suggestions, constructive criticisms and any comments related to the course.

In many well-established language schools such as BERLITZ, all the instructors are obliged to use the DIRECT METHOD which totally eliminates the use of the students' first language, i.e. translation is not allowed, WHETHER THE STUDENTS LIKE IT OR NOT.

Based on my research and own experience with their method, the Direct Method is effective but can make the learning process slow. It also makes some students uncomfortable finding it difficult and stressful when they try to understand everything the instructor says with mere gestures and through context.

Not all words and phrases can be depicted by mere gestures or images and not all foreign concepts can be understood through context. Hence, the students risk making incorrect guesses when trying to decipher the meaning through context alone because some phrases have various interpretations. Expressions that are hard to translate or do not have equivalent in one language can simply be explained explicitly and the instructors can simply teach the students how and when they are used but this is not done because the Direct Method strictly prohibits translation.

More surprisingly, traditional language schools fail to recognize the importance of TRANSLATION and INTERPRETATION which can result to a very profitable use of the newly acquired language in the students' career.

Many people are not aware of the fact that translators and interpreters generally earn more than twice as much as regular employees do, i.e. their average HOURLY WAGE is P800.00 to P1,500. 00. This is thrice as much as the DAILY WAGE of employees in the NCR region or anywhere in the Philippines which is P382.00 according to http://www.nwpc.dole.gov.ph/pages/statistics/stat_current_regional.html.

Bilingual and multilingual employees such as call center agents or receptionists who use more than one language in their jobs receive a FOREIGN LANGUAGE PREMIUM every month making them earn DOUBLE or even TRIPLE the salary of employees who use only English in their professions. This is true even in other countries.

If you want to see a SAMPLE PAYSLIP of a multilingual employee whose salary is higher than the Philippine president's income, feel free to visit : http://unitedmultilinguals.blogspot.com/

With the multimedia method, the students have the power to decide whether they want to have some translation in their native language or not.

The recommended process vis-a-vis translation used in the multimedia method is to stop translating only when the instructor is sure the students have grasped the meaning of the foreign word or phrase. There is no need to translate whenever the word or phrase can be depicted by images or gestures. Nonetheless, the instructor continually encourages the exclusive use of the target language as much as possible.

> If you are 18 years old or above, you can also choose ‘the UNCENSORED mode’ to be able to learn EXPLICIT and ADULT content, e.g. adult humor, profanity and swearwords, uncensored, adult video clips, etc. These 'TABOO' words and expressions are NEVER taught in most language schools despite the fact that you'll hear it very often not only in movies and mass media but most especially in REAL LIFE.For example, in the Mexican movie 'Y tu mamá también,' you'll hear A LOT of profanity, cursing and vulgarities that a student from a traditional language school (who, for instance, took up BASIC, INTERMEDIATE and ADVANCE SPANISH) will not understand because those phrases were not taught to him/her.

You can expect to REMEMBER and RETAIN the newly acquired information with the MULTI-MEDIA METHOD more effectively than other methods currently used in traditional schools.

HOME SERVICE: You can also opt to learn the language(s) of your choice in the comfort of your own home. (e.g. The instructor can go to your place or a rendezvous agreed upon by the instructor and the students(s).)

NOTE THAT THE PRIVATE CRASH COURSES THAT WE OFFER ARE QUITE DIFFERENT FROM REGULAR COURSES IN SCHOOLS BECAUSE WE ONLY FOCUS ON WHAT YOU NEED AND WHAT YOU WANT TO LEARN.

Multimedia Method Samples

Everything that will be discussed is organized in a user-friendly way.

The following screencaps were taken from one of the CD-ROMS that will be used for ENGLISH. All the other foreign languages such as French, Spanish, Japanese, German etc. are all organized in a very similar way.

SIMULATED CONVERSATIONS SHOWN IN THE SCREENCAPS AND THE VIDEO BELOW WILL EXPOSE THE STUDENTS NOT ONLY TO THE TEACHER'S SPEECH QUALITY BUT ALSO TO OTHER NATIVE SPEAKERS OF THE LANGUAGE.

This is very important because IN REAL LIFE, DIFFERENT INDIVIDUALS HAVE VARYING VOICE QUALITY, PITCH and SPEECH PATTERNS that the students have to get used to in able to understand them.

Most language schools do not use inter-active CD-ROMs or multimedia files featuring different native speakers. As a result, most of their students do not understand some native speakers particularly those who speak fast or when they listen to them on the radio, watch movies and especially those that they encounter in person.

Another very important main feature of the multimedia method not found in other language schools' curriculum is the INTER-ACTIVE PERSONALIZED PROGRESS TRACKER. Each student has a personal file with a progress tracker which allows them to track what they have learned so far and what else they need to learn to achieve their goal.

The student can bring home the MULTIMEDIA FILES with them, i.e. they will be SHARED (not SOLD) to the students' cellphones and/or laptop through USB transfer.

"THE BEST WAY TO LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE IS TO EXPERIENCE IT IN REAL-LIFE ACTION."

Learning a new language requires memorization of new words, phrases and grammatical rules which can sometimes be tedious and boring.

But with the MULTIMEDIA METHOD, you'll MEMORIZE foreign words more effectively because you will EXPERIENCE USING IT right away while having FUN! You can OPT* to re-enact certain dialogues simulating real-life situations (such as video snippets from movies or TV shows) using your personal information instead of the cast's/characters'.

This is an optional feature of the multimedia method but is very highly recommended.

You can OPT* to be recorded on video so you'll be able to compare the ORIGINAL VERSION with your 'personalized version'. The trainer may also use the screen caps, i.e. images from the video, to create a COMIC STRIP (manga style).

All the files will be shared to you through USB transfer. The audio OR video recording devices are all provided by the instructor.

*VIDEO-RECORDING of dialogues is optional. For shy people, we can just record their voices and they can just 'DUB' the videos with their voices.

Here are some samples of teaching materials used in the multimedia method. Notice that these images and video clips are easier to remember, especially if you yourself re-enact it and record yourself doing it with your own personal information.

FRENCH

TOPIC : INTRODUCING YOURSELF

WATCH THE VIDEO BELOW:

Jordy's rate of speech is fast which is the normal rate of native speakers. But don't worry, each word and phrase will be dealt with just like 'Je m'appelle ...' below. The instructor will also enunciate it slowly first before saying it in a normal rate (FAST).

Watch the video clip below:

YOUR TURN:

TOPIC: BASIC HIGH-FREQUENCY EXPRESSIONS part I:

FRENCH IN ACTION {IN REALISTIC SITUATIONS}

The students will be trained to mimic the native speakers' pronunciation and accent and will be recorded. Then they will be asked to re-enact the dialogues containing essential phrases. They can opt to use their personal information instead of the characters'.

WATCH THE VIDEO CLIP BELOW TO BE ABLE TO ANSWER THE 'WORKSHEET' ABOVE:

NOTE: MULTIMEDIA FILES such as videos, mp3s, games, etc. will be shared through USB transfer and are NOT for SALE. (peer-to-peer sharing)

There is a quick recording portion at the end of each session which will serve as a QUICK REVIEW of the ESSENTIAL EXPRESSIONS, WORDS and grammatical points that MUST BE REMEMBERED by the trainees.

IN ORDER TO IMMERSE THE STUDENT IN THE TARGET LANGUAGE, the trainer can also guide the trainees in making friends, i.e. in cyberspace and in real life, and socializing using the newly acquired language as well as give them tips to make good use of the internet in order to be fluent in their preferred language.

The audio/video files will be shared through USB to the trainees.

SAMPLE WORK SHEET:

AFTER THE DISCUSSION OF BASIC PHRASES, STUDENTS WILL BE ASKED TO ANSWER WORKSHEETS SUCH AS THE ONES SHOWN IN THE SCREEN CAPS BELOW:

FILL IN THE BLANKS WITH THE CORRECT FRENCH PHRASE:
