MAIN FEATURES OF THE MULTIMEDIA METHOD:
> You'll learn the target language(s) using various forms of media, e.g. interactive CD-ROMs, audio and video clips, flash cards, etc., while being exposed to exciting aspects of the country’s culture (e.g. Music, Sports, Entertainment /Showbiz, Computer Games, Culture, Food/Cuisine, etc);
*All the video clips, audio clips, pdf files, images, dictionaries, games and other language materials used in the course will be shared to the students through USB transfer . Samples of authentic cuisine, i.e. food & beverage) eaten by native speakers will also be shared to students during some sessions.
> You have the power to decide and choose what to learn, i.e. what you only need and/or want. You can also customize and personalize the language materials used and even make requests for multimedia files that you want to use in learning such as those featuring your favorite shows or celebrities in the target language. Your instructor is also open to any feedback including suggestions, constructive criticisms and any comments related to the course.
In many well-established language schools such as BERLITZ, all the instructors are obliged to use the DIRECT METHOD which totally eliminates the use of the students' first language, i.e. translation is not allowed, WHETHER THE STUDENTS LIKE IT OR NOT.
Based on my research and own experience with their method, the Direct Method is effective but can make the learning process slow. It also makes some students uncomfortable finding it difficult and stressful when they try to understand everything the instructor says with mere gestures and through context.
Not all words and phrases can be depicted by mere gestures or images and not all foreign concepts can be understood through context. Hence, the students risk making incorrect guesses when trying to decipher the meaning through context alone because some phrases have various interpretations. Expressions that are hard to translate or do not have equivalent in one language can simply be explained explicitly and the instructors can simply teach the students how and when they are used but this is not done because the Direct Method strictly prohibits translation.
More surprisingly, traditional language schools fail to recognize the importance of TRANSLATION and INTERPRETATION which can result to a very profitable use of the newly acquired language in the students' career.
Many people are not aware of the fact that translators and interpreters generally earn more than twice as much as regular employees do, i.e. their average HOURLY WAGE is P800.00 to P1,500. 00. This is thrice as much as the DAILY WAGE of employees in the NCR region or anywhere in the Philippines which is P382.00 according to http://www.nwpc.dole.gov.ph/pages/statistics/stat_current_regional.html.
Bilingual and multilingual employees such as call center agents or receptionists who use more than one language in their jobs receive a FOREIGN LANGUAGE PREMIUM every month making them earn DOUBLE or even TRIPLE the salary of employees who use only English in their professions. With the multimedia method, the students have the power to decide whether they want to have some translation in their native language or not.
The recommended process vis-a-vis translation used in the multimedia method is to stop translating only when the instructor is sure the students have grasped the meaning of the foreign word or phrase. There is no need to translate whenever the word or phrase can be depicted by images or gestures. Nonetheless, the instructor continually encourages the exclusive use of the target language as much as possible.
> If you are 18 years old or above, you can also choose ‘the UNCENSORED mode’ to be able to learn EXPLICIT and ADULT content, e.g. adult humor, profanity and swearwords, uncensored, adult video clips, etc. These 'TABOO' words and expressions are NEVER taught in most language schools despite the fact that you'll hear it very often not only in movies and mass media but most especially in REAL LIFE.For example, in the Mexican movie 'Y tu mamá también,' you'll hear A LOT of profanity, cursing and vulgarities that a student from a traditional language school (who, for instance, took up BASIC, INTERMEDIATE and ADVANCE SPANISH) will not understand because those phrases were not taught to him/her.
